The rearguard fights always prove futile. The French "seekers of nothing" could not prevent the irresistible rise of the Flemish Movement. One after the other, the instruments of the future legitimacy of Flanders were born. Nothing could prevent an absolute majority in the Flemish Parliament proclaiming independence. The end of Belgium would not mean the end of the world. An independent Flanders, Brussels as a city-state and a Wallonia integrated with France with a special status: it would not be the apocalypse, but, on the contrary, the end of these endless and sterile community squabbles, which really have nothing rewarding.

Le manque de fierté du Belge entraîne également le manque d'image claire pour le pays à l'étranger. D'autres petits pays comparables ont des images facilement reconnaissables: par exemple, la Suisse est immédiatement associée aux banques, aux horloges et aux montagnes, la Hollande aux tulipes, au fromage et aux moulins à vent. Pour la Belgique, par contre, aucune
